Whole Class Guided Reading

At St John's, we follow the mastery approach Pathways to Read reading programme for children in Years 2-6. The Pathways to Read programme teaches reading comprehension skills and develops reading fluency. Learning follows well-planned units of work each half term. There is a clear teaching sequence with three reading sessions per week with
opportunities for children to master key reading skills and evidence their learning through whole class learning, group work, paired and independent follow on activities.
Reading sessions focus on key reading skills:
 Session 1: teacher-led modelled fluency, teaching children to predict and clarify;
 Session 2: teaching children to retrieve, explain, and practise reading with fluency;
 Session 3: teaching children to summarise, strategy check, read independently and discuss;

Children are taught to read fluently, through a range of strategies and reading for pleasure is also promoted. Fluency is taught through a range of strategies: teacher-led modelling, choral reading, echo reading, paired reading, reading individually at speed, repeated reading and silent reading. The Pathways to Read approach also provides many opportunities for widening children’s vocabulary and this builds on the extensive work we do in school to provide our children with a rich and varied vocabulary.
